Saudi Arabia set to execute a woman’s rights activist

Saudi Arabia lifted the ban of women driving earlier this year, amid much fanfare. So is the repressive kingdom finally embracing women’s rights? Absolutely not.

In fact, the kingdom is on the verge of executing Israa al-Ghomgham, a female political activist. She is one of many jailed women’s rights activists and may face execution with a sword for participating in anti-government protests.

Saudi Arabia cut ties with Canada earlier this year after the country urged it to release these activists. Meanwhile, the American government is keeping deafeningly silent. No doubt Trump would love to jail women’s rights activists himself.

Meet the new queen of Tinder

Last Sunday Natasha Aponte, a New York-based model, set up a mass date with hundreds of guys from Tinder. When they had all arrived at Union Square, for what they thought was a one-on-one date, she told the gaggle of guys that dating apps were “difficult”, so she had decided to “bring everyone in person and see how that goes”. Forget ghosting – is “crowding” now going to become all the rage?

It has since emerged that Aponte, who brought a full camera crew with her to the stunt, has been working with a viral marketing company called Rob Bliss Creative. The company were also behind the viral video in which Shoshana Roberts walks through New York for 10 hours with secret cameras attached to her, to highlight how often she is harassed and catcalled on the streets.

Not only as stunt, but she didn’t even come up with the idea. A man did all the real work.

Now, Aponte has revealed she worked with a producer named Rob Bliss to execute the massive dating scheme. Bliss produced a short film explaining how and why the duo planned the ruse. The film, titled “The Tinder Trap,” was released on Thursday, and included footage from Aponte’s mass date in Union Square.

“There’s a lot of issues related to the online dating,” Rob Bliss told CBS News. “It’s sexist, ableist … there’s a lot of problems.” Bliss said his idea was to have someone do in public what a lot of people have been doing on Tinder: judging prospective dates on minuscule things, like physical characteristics.

He says it took him two years to plan it, and Aponte, an actress he hired, joined the project about two months ago.

“I talked to Natasha about the project, my ideas for it, and she had dealt with some similar issues when she had been on a dating app and she wanted to join in,” Bliss said. They set Aponte up with a Tinder profile — something she hasn’t had for years, she said — and she started swiping right on every guy the app offered her.

“I took this project because it’s something I feel is wrong,” Aponte told CBS News. “It’s sad to see on Tinder or online ‘I’m not going to date you because of x, y and z.'”

To measure the prevalence of sexist beliefs, the researchers drew on eight questions on attitudes toward gender issues that have been part of the survey since the 1970s. Among other things, the questions measure agreement with statements such as “Women should take care of running their home and leave running the country up to men” and “A working mother can establish just as warm and secure a relationship with her children as a mother who does not work.”

They also ask respondents if they would ever vote for a female president and whether men are “better suited emotionally” for politics.

The researchers combined responses to these questions and summarized them at the state level, creating a nationwide index of sexist attitudes (they previously used a similar method to measure the prevalence of racist beliefs). Mapping those numbers, above, yields a comprehensive picture of the geography of American sexism.

Individuals low on emotional stability reported more frequent sexual dysfunction and lower sexual satisfaction.
